Target Attribution Stats Guide

The DriveMetaData (DMD) Target Attribution Stats module provides executive-level financial intelligence and multi-channel attribution workbenches. By bridging raw advertising logs (target_attribution_logs_ad_data_v4) with verified transactional revenue, marketing teams can quantify real Return on Ad Spend (ROAS), evaluate multi-touch attribution models, and optimize acquisition budgets across ad networks.

1. Overview & Business Value

Siloed advertising platforms (Google Ads, Meta Ads Manager, TikTok Ads) report conversions in isolation, each claiming 100% credit for the same customer transaction. This results in inflated conversion counts, distorted acquisition costs, and poor capital allocation.

The Target Attribution Stats dashboard solves this by providing a single source of truth:

  • Unified Financial Attribution: Evaluate actual ad expenditure alongside verified gross order value across all channels.
  • Multi-Model Attribution Comparison: Contrast First Touch (discovery), Last Touch (closer), Linear (nurture), and Position-Based (U-shaped) models side-by-side.
  • Assisted Conversion Intelligence: Identify channels that educate and nurture customers early without demanding direct closing credit.
  • Sales Cycle Lag Visibility: Measure time-to-conversion distributions to avoid pausing campaigns before customer deliberation windows conclude.
  • New vs. Returning Customer Mix: Track how effectively each marketing channel drives net-new customer acquisition versus repeat purchases.

2. Architecture & Data Flow

3. Step-by-Step Execution Guide

Step 1: Access the Dashboard

From the main navigation bar, select Reports $\rightarrow$ Target Attribution Stats (or navigate directly to /target-attribution-stats).

Step 2: Set the Date Range Filter

Use the date range toolbar at the top of the page:

  • Quick Presets: Select 7D (Last 7 days), 30D (Last 30 days), 3M (Last 3 months), or 12M (Last 12 months).
  • Custom Calendar: Click the calendar icon to select specific starting and ending dates.
  • All cards, attribution models, and data tables synchronize immediately to the chosen timeframe.

Step 3: Analyze the Executive KPI Grid

The top section highlights high-level financial and efficiency metrics:

  • Gross Order Value (GOV): Total transaction value attributed to marketing touchpoints.
  • Total Ad Spend: Aggregated media expenditure across connected ad accounts.
  • Blended ROAS: Overall return on advertising expenditure (GOV / Spend).
  • Active Users: Count of unique engaged individuals (uniqExact(dmd_uid)) interacting with campaigns.
  • Average Order Value (AOV): Mean revenue generated per completed order.
  • Assisted Order Value: Gross revenue supported by multi-touch customer journeys.
  • Customer Acquisition Cost (CAC): Media spend per brand-new converting customer.
  • Cost Per Acquisition (CPA): Blended cost per transaction across all orders.
  • Conversion Rate (CVR): Percentage of tracked ad click events concluding in a purchase.
  • New Customer Mix %: Share of revenue originating from first-time buyers.

Step 4: Compare Attribution Models

The Channel Attribution section allows marketers to switch between four distinct mathematical credit models:

  1. First Touch: Assigns 100% of order value to the earliest recorded interaction. Reveals which channels generate the most customer awareness.
  2. Last Touch: Assigns 100% of order value to the final touchpoint prior to transaction. Reveals which channels close sales.
  3. Linear: Distributes credit equally across all touchpoints in the journey.
  4. Position-Based (40/40/20): Assigns 40% to the discovery touchpoint, 40% to the closing touchpoint, and divides 20% across intermediate nurturing steps.

[!TIP] Compare the First Touch and Last Touch values for social video channels (e.g., TikTok). If First Touch revenue is high but Last Touch revenue is low, the channel is a discovery powerhouse that should not be evaluated solely on direct conversions.

Step 5: Review Channel Contribution & ROAS Visualizations

  • Channel Contribution Chart: Visualizes the proportion of total order value driven by each ad channel under the active attribution model.
  • ROAS by Channel Chart: Visualizes channel efficiency against target benchmarks, highlighting which channels exceed or trail target return thresholds.

Step 6: Inspect Time-to-Conversion Distribution

Customer deliberation varies widely across product categories. The Time to Conversion panel displays conversion volume distributed across five latency buckets:

  • (< 1 hour) — Instantaneous impulse conversions.
  • 1 to 24 hours — Same-day conversions.
  • 1 to 7 days — Short-cycle consideration.
  • 7 to 30 days — Mid-cycle consideration.
  • (> 30 days) — Long-cycle considered purchases.

Use this distribution to determine how long you must wait before evaluating the final performance of a newly launched campaign.

Step 7: Explore the Performance Matrix Table

The Performance Matrix provides an enterprise data table breaking down key operational metrics per channel:

  • Columns: Channel, Ad Spend, Total Conversions, CPA, ROAS, and Assisted Orders.
  • Column Manager: Click Customize Columns to reorder or show/hide specific columns.
  • Sorting: Click any column header to sort ascending or descending.
  • Table Views Preference: Save customized column layouts and filter states as reusable views using the Table View Selector.

Step 8: Evaluate the Customer Mix Table

The Customer Mix table evaluates customer acquisition health across channels:

  • First Purchase Revenue: Revenue generated from net-new customers.
  • Returning Customer Revenue: Revenue generated from repeat buyers.
  • New Customer Mix %: The ratio of acquisition revenue to total revenue.
  • Use this table to distinguish pure acquisition channels (e.g., Paid Social prospecting) from retention/reactivation channels (e.g., Brand Search or Email).

4. Attribution Model & KPI Reference

MetricCalculation FormulaTarget Guidance
ROASGross Order Value / Ad SpendHigher is better. A ROAS > 3.0 typically indicates profitable unit economics.
CPATotal Ad Spend / Total ConversionsLower is better. Must remain below the average customer contribution margin.
CACTotal Ad Spend / First-Time BuyersBenchmark against Customer Lifetime Value (LTV); target LTV:CAC > 3:1.
CVR(Conversions / Click Events) * 100Benchmark varies by channel (typically 1.5% to 4.5% for e-commerce).
AOVGross Order Value / Total OrdersMeasure whether specific ad channels attract higher-basket buyers.
New Customer Mix(First Purchase Rev / Total Rev) * 100Channels with > 70% new customer mix serve primarily as acquisition engines.

5. Edge Cases, Limits & Attribution Nuances

5.1 View-Through vs. Click-Through Attribution

  • Click-Through: User actively clicked an ad and later converted. Represents clear active intent.
  • View-Through: User was served an ad impression (e.g., video banner) without clicking, and subsequently converted within the lookback window.
  • Guidance: Ensure view-through attribution windows are configured conservatively (e.g., 24 hours) to prevent ad networks from taking credit for organic transactions.

5.2 Ad Fraud & Invalid Traffic Filtering

The ingestion engine automatically assigns an AI-powered fraud_score (0.0 to 1.0) to every ad log entry based on IP reputation, device fingerprint anomalies, and click-spam patterns:

  • Events with fraud_score > 0.85 are quarantined and excluded from conversion credit.
  • View suspicious publisher networks in the Pivot Report to eliminate underperforming supply partners.

5.3 Privacy Sandbox & Tracking Opt-Outs

When users disable ad tracking (is_ad_tracking_enabled = 0) on iOS or modern browsers:

  • Click identifier parameters (gclid, fbclid) may be absent or truncated.
  • DMD utilizes first-party cookies, server-to-server CAPI webhooks, and the DMD Identity Graph to preserve deterministic attribution without violating platform privacy policies.

6. Enterprise Best Practices & Troubleshooting

Troubleshooting Matrix

SymptomProbable CauseResolution
Platform ROAS is higher in Google Ads than in DMDGoogle Ads claims 100% credit for conversions where the user also clicked a Meta ad before buying. This is expected. DMD dedupes multi-channel journeys and allocates shared credit, eliminating double-counted revenue.

Best Practices Checklist

  • Compare Models Weekly: Review the gap between First Touch and Last Touch revenue every Monday to ensure top-of-funnel budgets are not prematurely defunded.
  • Enforce UTM Standardization: Standardize naming conventions across Google, Meta, and TikTok to ensure clean channel categorization.
  • Monitor Latency Buckets: Tailor your retargeting windows to match your actual Time-to-Conversion distribution curve.
